“Cheech & Chong Up in Smoke”- 1978 Tommy Chong & Lou Adler

Taking place in the 70’s two men completely attracted to the illegal drug marijuana, go out of their ways searching for a dealer willing to sell. After many attempts the plans kept failing due to police busts, smuggling, and police pull overs. Blindly they smuggle a load of marijuana worth 9 million across the border, explained as growing and producing a strain in Mexico is cheaper than anywhere else. We notice that these two hippies never get caught, leaving the audience intrigued for the moment they do get arrested. What strikes me is Adler wasn’t afraid to show a scene in which a lady was sniffing Ajax, a white powdery cleaning supply, a substance that shouldn’t be inhaled as it can mess with your system and possibly cause a heart attack. I’ve recently been hearing a lot of talk about cocaine, as I see the popularity of it on social media. The one tip they always give is to notice when it’s pure and when it’s mixed with other white powdery substances. The lady then ends up making weird faces and noises proving that sniffing substances other than the original product can lead to an unusual sensation. The movie provides entertainment to viewers who linger on the scenario of smuggling always equaling jail time, but if authorities aren’t doing their job correctly, for in the seventies they weren’t then there would be no jail time. Has law enforcement improved on narcotic cases?

Has the Bad Rep of Marijuana Altered?
